Unguarded BordersWaltzing into the Land of Milk and HoneyMichelle Malkin takes on the issue of border security and the lack of progress in protecting the country from terrorism: What good is it, they wonder, to send American soldiers to defend other countries' borders if we're not willing to defend our own? We have been over this issue in the past, but given the importance of securing our borders it is worth another look. The sad fact remains that neither Republicans or Democrats have the will, guts, or smarts to tackle the very real problems of border security. Like Michelle says, it doesn't do much good to spend billions of dollars on 'homeland security' when our borders remain wide open to any and all who care to cross. More importantly, the bottom line remains a reality that we must face: We cannot possibly guard everything in this country to a sufficient degree to ensure that no attack occurs. This is simply the indesputable truth. We can take reasonable measures to guard the more important assets but those who want to attack will always have soft targets to pick and choose from. But.....the situation on the borders is pathetic, always has been, and needs some serious work. Still, in the unlikely event that we are completely successful at stopping all illegal land traffic across the borders, smugglers and illegals will then avail themselves of other avenues of entry such as our seacoasts. If we somehow manage to accomplish the impossible and totally secure the coasts, terrorists and illegals will find other means to infiltrate. These means may even be legal immigration as our naive generousity allows our enemies to migrate here nearly at will. They simply must put up a legitimate front (or not in some cases) and immigrate 'legally', and become a sleeper until such time as their masters call them to action. If you find yourself discouraged at the reality of this impossible task of completely guarding the homeland, turn that discouragement into determination to do the only thing that will help to truly increase our security. Take the fight to them. We cannot do the impossible, but we can do the logical. Read more »
